The System Diagnostics Test ensures that you have a properly working microphone, an accessible webcam and that the rest of your device’s hardware and the connection are sufficient to stream the information required by the exam administrator to the Proctorio servers in real-time.
The goals of the Pre-Check process are to inform test takers of the data that will be collected during the exam, access the recording devices, and ensure all required hardware and software are working correctly.
After the pre-checks listed below, your image and student or government-issued ID may be verified. Then, you may be asked to sign an exam integrity agreement and perform a Periodic Desk Scan.
Note: All pre-checks, the ID verification process, a desk scan, and the exam integrity agreement will only be present if the exam administrator enabled certain exam settings.

Internet Connection Information
1. Video and Audio Recordings
The webcam and microphone check occurs during the System Diagnostics Test.
To pass the webcam check, you are required to have a working webcam. If there is a webcam connected to your computer (either internal or external) and you are still seeing an error message, verify that your camera is working with other applications such as the Camera application on your computer.
The microphone level test collects your vocal signature and samples the audio in your exam environment. This pre-check is designed to ensure that the proper audio will be captured.
The microphone level test detects the difference between the white noise of the exam environment and talking levels.
Please note: White noise within the exam environment will not alert the exam administrator to investigate whether or not you were talking to someone else.
Note: If your exam administrator has enabled the video or audio recording settings, you MUST allow your preferred Internet browser to access your webcam and microphone before entering the exam.
These permissions will show under the address bar, and Proctorio will highlight them with a dark overlay and point to them with an arrow.
If you missed this step, you can click on the padlock icon in the top-left corner of your address bar.
Then, simply toggle the button or click Allow for both your camera and microphone.
If you do not have access to a webcam or microphone, speak to your exam administrator immediately. They may be able to provide an alternative form of assessment.
2. Screen Recording
If your exam administrator enabled the screen recording setting, you MUST share your screen.
Select (click on) the screen you would like to share in the pop-up window and select Share to grant permission.
Hitting Cancel will prevent you from starting your exam until the permissions are accepted.
Sometimes, this pop-up will appear behind your current browser. If you cannot see the pop-up, simply minimize the browser and check if the popup is behind. You can also try the step below:
- Windows OS - use ALT+TAB to find the popup or to mouse over Chrome in the taskbar to reveal the screen share popup.
- Mac OS - use F3, or right-click Chrome in the Launch bar and then click "Show all windows"
When the screen is being recorded, there will be a small dialog box at the bottom of the browser window.
When the screen is being recorded, there will be a small dialog box at the bottom of the browser window.
If you click STOP, it will end the screen-sharing, and you will be prompted to reload your page and start all over again. This dialog can be hidden at any time by selecting X or HIDE in the top-right corner of the box.
3. Internet Connection
You will need a strong Internet connection to enter the exam and pass this part of the diagnostics pre-checks.
How fast is your connection right now?
Test your internet connection now!
This ensures that your computer and connection are fast enough to stream the video, audio, and desktop behavior data to the Proctorio servers. The Internet connection icon will remain gray until the permissions to each recording device have been accepted.
If any permissions are not accepted, the Internet connection test cannot be run.
Your device may not pass the Internet connection pre-check if:
- Too many programs are running, forcing the device to run slowly
- The internet connection is slow
