You'll need a laptop or desktop computer for class that meets certain criteria. Below we provide basic criteria needed for the device you plan on using. Please check your device and ensure you are ready for day one of class. If needed, you can request support to access and check your laptop for course readiness. Technology Requirements for Students
To be successful in your courses, you’ll need a computer that meets the following requirements:
Computer Requirements

Windows: Windows 11 24H2 or later (Laptop or Desktop)
- Windows 10 is no longer supported.

Mac: MacBook Neo/Air/Pro with the latest software update
- Device must be a model released within the last 4 years.
- Processor: Intel i5 (10th generation or newer) with 2.5 GHz base clock and boost up to 4.3 GHz or,
- Apple M1 (or better).
- Memory (RAM): 8GB or more
- Storage: At least 120GB of free space
- Webcam & Microphone: Built-in or external
- Speakers: Required for desktops (built-in is fine for laptops)
- Internet: High-speed (50 Mbps or higher) with a wired connection (preferred) or strong Wi-Fi
- Browser: Google Chrome (must be installed and used)
Devices That Will NOT Work
- Chromebooks – Not compatible with Smith Chason College technology.
- Tablets (iPads, Android, etc.) – Not supported for coursework or exams.
- Cell phones – Not recommended for live lectures, submitting assignments, or taking tests.
- Canvas Mobile App (iOS or Android) - Not compatible with some coursework and should not be used.
- Canvas Desktop App (Windows or Mac) - Not compatible with coursework. Canvas must be accessed through a web browser only.
Educational Software Application Usage Requirements
- All learning platform assignments, such as McGraw Hill Connect and ALEKS assignments, must be accessed through Canvas. Accessing learning platform coursework directly using the third party application may result in loss of progress and grades.
- The Proctorio Chrome extension is required to be installed on all devices for the purposes of exam proctoring.
- The Canvas Mobile Application is not compatible with some coursework and should not be used.
How to Check Your Windows System Information
Before you start, make sure your computer meets these requirements. If you're unsure how to check, follow the steps below for Windows devices:
- Press the Windows icon and open Settings.
- Select System, then click About.
- Under Device Specifications, you'll see details about your processor, RAM, and storage.
- To verify your Windows version, scroll down under Windows Specifications - you'll see your Edition and Version listed there.
How to Check Your Mac’s System Information
Before you start, make sure your computer meets these requirements. If you're unsure how to check, follow the steps below for Apple devices.
If you're using a Mac, follow these steps to find your system details:
- Click the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen.
- Select "About This Mac."
- In the Overview tab, you’ll see details about your processor, RAM, and year of your device.
- Click the Storage tab to check your available space.
- Click the Memory tab to see your RAM.
Important Note
- Please keep your devices and browsers up to date.
- If your Mac is over four years old but still meets the minimum requirements, consider upgrading to avoid compatibility issues with future technology updates during your time at Smith Chason College.
